AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Rumors Reveal Battleworld Details, Resistance Avengers, Symbiote Spider-Man, and More
Marvel’s Multiverse Saga may be heading toward its finish line, but the rumor mill is getting increasingly weird on the way there. We’re talking Resistance Avengers, a potentially more savage Hulk, Scarlet Witch helping shape Battleworld, Spider-Man possibly getting the Symbiote, mysterious allies serving Doctor Doom, and Doctor Strange apparently going by "Boris." You know, normal MCU stuff.
With Spider-Man: Brand New Day now in the rearview, attention is shifting toward Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and the latest batch of alleged details offers some interesting clues about how Marvel Studios could bring this massive story together.
Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus has shared a new collection of MCU rumors covering the next two Avengers movies, along with Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s upcoming Ghost Rider project. As always with rumors like these, nothing should be treated as official until Marvel confirms it, and plans can change during development and production.
One lingering question surrounding Avengers: Doomsday is what happened to Monica Rambeau after The Marvels. Teyonah Parris hasn’t been part of the conversation surrounding the movie, but Perez believes that may be intentional and designed "to keep some characters secret," particularly with major surprises reportedly being saved for "the third act."
The current rumor is that "Monica and Maria are out and about together on a separate story while the events of Doomsday transpire," which would explain why neither character has been prominent in what we’ve heard about the movie. Even so, there’s reportedly a strong possibility they’ll factor into one or both upcoming Avengers films.
They may not be the only familiar faces Marvel is holding back. Thor is reportedly going to call in some reinforcements during Doomsday, including "a couple of Asgardians" we haven’t seen since Thor: Ragnarok. That immediately raises questions about the Warriors Three and whether Marvel might find some Multiverse-flavored way to bring at least a couple of them back.
Another long-running rumor claimed Avengers: Doomsday would kick off with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, and Green Goblin battling the X-Men universe’s Deadpool and Wolverine. It’s currently unclear whether that opening remains part of the movie, but Tobey Maguire is still expected to appear in both Doomsday and Secret Wars.
There’s also some clarification regarding the confusing post-credits scene in Captain America: Brave New World. According to Perez, The Leader’s warning was essentially pointing toward the approaching end of the world rather than teasing something more specific.
As for Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Captain America reportedly has a "sizeable" role in Avengers: Doomsday. The movie is also said to include "a nice little scene for Sam that puts to rest any doubt about who owns the shield or who is Captain America in this movie."
Considering the number of legacy heroes and alternate-universe characters expected to be running around, giving Sam a definitive Captain America moment sounds like one that some fans will appreciate.
Things get considerably crazier once we reach Avengers: Secret Wars. One of the more interesting pieces of information involves a group called the "Resistance Avengers," which sounds like it could become one of the movie’s central heroic factions.
Perez describes the lineup as "the leaders (older, established figures), there’s the newbies (The younger heroes), and there’s the never-before-seen characters (there [are three at the moment]). This group of allies is going to be divided into smaller groups, chasing different stories."
That setup makes a lot of sense for a movie attempting to juggle an enormous roster. Instead of throwing dozens of heroes into every scene, Secret Wars could split them into smaller teams tackling different missions across Battleworld before eventually bringing everyone together.
Among those heroes will apparently be Hulk, and Marvel may be moving the character closer to the version fans loved in Thor: Ragnarok. The Hulk appearing in Secret Wars is rumored to be the same as, or at least similar to, the more aggressive Jade Jaws we saw in that film.
After years of Smart Hulk, watching the big guy cut loose again during the Multiverse Saga’s final battle would be awesome.
Of course, the heroes need someone to fight, and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is expected to remain the primary villain of Avengers: Secret Wars. Doom apparently won’t be operating alone, either. He’ll reportedly have "certain characters" fighting alongside him because "they are all convinced to serve him until they're freed."
That opens the door to some fun possibilities. If Doom has control over heroes, villains, or Multiversal variants, Marvel could create matchups that would normally never happen.
Spider-Man may also receive a major upgrade during all of this chaos. Marvel Studios is reportedly considering having Holland’s Peter Parker acquire the Symbiote during Avengers: Secret Wars. Several approaches are apparently being discussed, including "an original take" as well as ideas closer to what audiences saw in Spider-Man 3.
Putting Peter in the black suit during Secret Wars would also bring the MCU closer to the character’s comic book history, where Spider-Man famously obtained the alien costume during the original Secret Wars storyline. Whether Marvel follows that path or completely remixes it remains to be seen.
Then there’s Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. Wanda Maximoff is rumored to have an "important role" in Avengers: Secret Wars, and her involvement could go much deeper than simply joining another superhero battle. According to Perez, "her power is a key element to how Doom's Battleworld gets made."
If accurate, that could make Wanda one of the most important characters in the entire movie. Her reality-altering abilities have already caused major problems across the MCU, and tying them directly to Doom’s creation of Battleworld would connect her story to the ultimate collapse and reconstruction of the Multiverse.
It could also mean everything Marvel has been building around the Maximoff family eventually feeds into Secret Wars.
Away from the Avengers, we also have an update on Ghost Rider. Gosling is expected to play Johnny Blaze, who reportedly won’t be introduced as a rookie still figuring out the Spirit of Vengeance. The character is said to have already been operating as Ghost Rider for some time when the story begins.
Then there’s the possibility that Sacha Baron Cohen will reprise his Ironheart role as Mephisto. Ghost Rider and Mephisto have plenty of history, so bringing the character into Johnny Blaze’s movie would be an obvious way to expand the supernatural side of the MCU.
Finally, we need to talk about "Boris." Recently leaked Avengers: Doomsday imagery has raised questions about a strange-looking figure identified by that name. According to the latest information, "Boris" is actually Doctor Strange, with the Sorcerer Supreme apparently becoming one of Doom’s followers.
There’s also an update regarding another image that has circulated online. The image is reportedly legitimate material from Avengers: Doomsday, though it has been AI-enhanced. The scene supposedly takes place following the Sentinel battle, at a point when Doom has already taken Steve Rogers.
Doomsday appears positioned to tear the Multiverse apart, while Secret Wars could pick through the wreckage with Battleworld, Resistance Avengers, compromised heroes, returning legacy characters, a Symbiote-powered Spider-Man, and Scarlet Witch caught near the center of Doom’s plan.
There’s still plenty we don’t know, and some of these ideas could change before the movies hit theaters. But if even a good portion of this MCU rumor roundup pans out, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are shaping up to be absolutely massive superhero movies.
And somehow, amid Doctor Doom reshaping reality, Scarlet Witch helping create Battleworld, and heroes from across the Multiverse joining the fight, we’re also going to have to deal with Doctor Strange being called Boris.
The Multiverse is a strange place.
