BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Feature Film Moves Forward with X-MEN Franchise Writer and Producer Simon Kinberg
Universal Pictures is moving forward with its feature film adaptation of Battlestar Galactica. They’ve brought on X-Men franchise writer and producer Simon Kinberg to write and produce the film.
Kinberg will join producer Dylan Clark (The Batman, War for the Planet of the Apes), who has been overseeing the development of this project for a long time. Kinberg said in a statement:
“‘Battlestar Galactica’ is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring. I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”
This film project is on top of the Battlestar Galactica series being developed by Mr. Robot and Homecoming creator Sam Esmail. The show is being developed for Peacock, and it was originally being billed as “an original series,” but it might end up being set in the same universe as Ronald D. Moore’s epic series. The two are not connected.
I’m way more excited about the series than the film. Kinberg is hit or miss with his projects, and he was the writer and director of the last X-Men: Dark Pheonix movie, which was a ridiculously bad film. But, on the bright side, he also worked on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Rebels.
Kinberg intends to start from scratch with his script for the feature, which has been in development for years. Lisa Joy (Westworld) and Jack Paglen (Transcendence) previously worked on the script. At one point Bryan Singer was attached to direct, but I think his career is over.
I hope that Kinberg ends up turning in a surprisingly good script. We’ll just have to wait and see.
