BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE Script Originally Featured a Scene with Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis' Characters
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had some fun with a couple of different story concepts, but neither one of them involved the return of the Maitlands, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis), from the original movie.
They were mentioned a few times and we learned that they had found a way to move on to the next plane of existence, which explains why they aren’t involved with this film. But, the original script for the sequel actually did have a scene that brought the characters back!
Screenwriter Alfred Gough recently spoke to EW about the version of the script that did include the Maitlands in the new movie. He also revealed why the scene was ultimately cut.
Gough explained: "There was a version [of the script] where they just showed up at the end, but the problem is they're ghosts. So they kind of needed to look like they were 35, which was never going to happen. I think Tim felt, and Miles and I agreed, that their story had been told. So how do we move on from that?"
Yeah, it didn’t really make sense to bring them back. Their story was told, and their inclusion just would’ve added to an already messy and convoluted story.
But, it is interesting to learn what their initial plan was for the characters.
