BEHEMOTH! Trailer Sees Pedro Pascal Play a Gifted Cellist in Tony Gilroy's New Drama
Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for Behemoth!, and it offers a very different kind of role for Pedro Pascal. Instead of playing a Star Wars bounty hunter, protector, or action hero, Pascal takes center stage as a classically trained cellist in an emotional drama from Tony Gilroy, the filmmaker behind The Bourne Legacy and Andor.
The film looks like an intimate character story centered on music, family, and the complicated relationships that shape a person's life. While Gilroy is known for writing smart thrillers and political dramas, Behemoth! appears to take him into much more personal territory.
The official logline reads: "A gifted cellist, Alex Serian, returns home to Los Angeles after 20 years on the road. Music, which has been the constant, all-consuming river of his life, begins to carry Alex on an adventure that will change him forever."
Pascal plays Alex Serian, a musician whose career has kept him away from home for decades. Returning to Los Angeles forces him to reconnect with family while confronting the life he's built around his passion for music.
Judging by the trailer, the film isn't interested in flashy performances or the celebrity side of the arts. Instead, it focuses on the personal sacrifices that come with dedicating yourself completely to your craft.
The ensemble cast includes Olivia Wilde, Eva Victor, Alexa Swinton, Kaya Ralls, Erik Griffin, JoBeth Williams, Margarita Levieva, Hank Azaria, and Will Arnett.
Gilroy wrote and directed the film while also producing alongside John Gilroy and Sanne Wohlenberg. Executive producers include Cameron Chidsey, Katie Goodson, DanTram Nguyen, Jeremy Reitz, and Rayne Roberts.
Interestingly, David Harbour was originally attached to star in the project but exited in January. According to sources, Harbour stepped away after becoming overwhelmed while finishing Netflix's Stranger Things, choosing to take time to rest instead.4
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Pascal shared why Behemoth! immediately connected with him and why Alex stood out among the many characters he's played over the years.
“There was something overall about this story that I think I connected to more cerebrally and emotionally,” Pascal said. “[Alex is] not a rock star. He’s not even somebody that’s looking for the spotlight.
“He’s just someone whose first language is music…. It’s a love letter to music; it’s a love letter to movies. It’s about family; it’s about legacy; it’s about healing. I wished for myself this kind of experience as an actor before I ever got to act.”
Rather than building toward big dramatic moments, the movie leans into the emotional pull of music and the relationships that define Alex's journey.
It's a refreshing change of pace for Pascal, who continues to bounce between blockbuster franchises and character-driven projects.
Behemoth! is sure to be one of Gilroy's most personal films to date and another impressive showcase for Pascal's range as an actor.
