Ben Schwartz Says PLASTIC MAN Could Be The Deadpool of the DC Universe

Ben Schwartz (Sonic The Hedgehog, House of Lies) is keeping the hope alive that one day he’ll have the opportunity to play Plastic Man for DC Entertainment.

A few months ago, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a film based on the stretchy powered character. As soon as the news broke, Schwartz wanted the role! Shazam! director David F. Sandberg has even shown interest in directing the film if Schwartz stars in it.

While talking to CB about the character, Schwartz explains that Plastic Man could be DC’s Deadpool:

“If you look at the original Plastic Man, he’s a thief, he gets these superpowers, and then he uses his connections with being in the crooked world to aid the police.”

“But in my head, how much fun if he was a thief, got superpowers, and was like, ‘Screw it, I want to keep being crooked.’ But he’s also, if you look at the cartoons or the other iterations of him, he’s funny! He’s so funny. And I think what Ryan Reynolds and Tim Miller did with Deadpool, you could have a funny superhero in DC. Shazam! just did it and I think it’s gonna be great. That’s it, I just love that character a lot. I think I’d get to be goofy if I ever got the chance to do it.”

While Plastic Man was never really one of my favorite superheroes, I can see the point that Schwartz is making. He’s right, Plastic Man could actually bring that irreverent comedy to the DC universe. I don’t think he’d be as good as Deadpool, but it could still be a lot of fun!

Warner Bros. hired Amanda Idoko (Breaking News In Yuba County) to write the script for the film and in regards to her, Schwartz said:

“They have a great writer, they have a great writer. I’m psyched for her to write it. And then in the one-in-one-billion chance I get to audition or even do it, that would be crazy.”

I have no idea what will come of this film project, but I think Schwartz is a solid fit for Plastic Man. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of story they tell for Plastic Man, how the character is handled, and what he will look like.

What do you think about Plastic Man being the Deadpool of the DC universe?

Plastic Man was created by Jack Cole in 1941. He joined DC Comics in 1956, and he was a member of the Justice League. Plastic Man’s real name is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, he was originally a crook who was saved by Batman from an acid vat. But that vat gave him the powers to bend and twist his body into any form. He’s a very comedic character, but beneath his joking exterior, he is a valuable asset in any situation.
