Benedict Cumberbatch Says The MCU Will "Explode Into Other Dimensions" Teasing a Marvel Multiverse
There are a lot of things coming to the MCU, including all of the Marvel properties that Fox has owned over the years. A lot of fans have been wondering how the studio might integrate these X-Men characters into the MCU. Well, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) might have just answered that question.
During an interview in the "Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years – The Evolution of Heroes" featurette on the Thor: Ragnarok Blu-ray, Benedict Cumberbatch indicated that we'll start seeing the Marvel Multiverse expand in as the studio moves into their Phase 4 plans. The actor explains:
"What we’ve seen happen within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is this ever-expanding couture of superheroes. And I think now we’re at the stage where this universe, even within our world, has gotten quite crowded and it’s just about to explode into other dimensions."
That seems like a logical step for the studio to take as it would make things less complicated and give filmmakers a little more freedom, as some films won't be bound to certain timelines and events. It would also allow for more standalone stories that don't need to be connected to anything.
As I'm sure you're aware, comic book publishers have often used multiverses to explore other stories away from their main timelines. With an influx of a lot of new characters from The X-Men, Fantastic Four and more, along with talk of a Marvel-R brand, a multiverse seems like a logical solution to make it all work.
I've loved everything that Marvel has done up until this point and I'm excited and curious to see how everything will move forward after Avengers 4. Do you think that building a multiverse is the way to go?
