Benedict Cumberbatch Spills on Doctor Strange’s Marvel Future: "Is That a Spoiler? F**k It"

Marvel Studios is known for its airtight secrecy, but Benedict Cumberbatch just threw a curveball during a candid chat with Variety.

The Doctor Strange star shared some surprising details about the character’s Marvel Cinematic Universe trajectory, including his unexpected absence from Avengers: Doomsday.

“Is that a spoiler? F**k it,” Cumberbatch said, clearly not caring about the Marvel spoiler police. He explained that Strange won’t be in Doomsday because the character’s arc isn’t “aligning with this part of the story.”

Cumberbatch then went on to confirm that Doctor Strange will be a major player in Avengers: Secret Wars. He teased: “He’s in a lot of that and quite central to where things might go.”

The actor previously talked about the character saying: “I am interested in seeing where these costs take him,” he said. “There is a lot more to play and it’s very exciting.”

He went on to say that the offerings within the Marvel Cinematic Universe are “grand gestures,” and added: “When they are really good, they capture the zeitgeist, speak to us and our culture. They are so much fun to do.”

The Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars films will serve as the grand finale of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, and it will see Robert Downey Jr. make his debut as Doctor Doom, flipping the script on his iconic legacy.

Doctor Strange might be sitting out Doomsday, but it sounds like he will play an essential role in shaping the MCU’s future.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released in May 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled to arrive in May 2027.
