BIRDS OF PREY Director Cathy Yan Wants the Sequel to Focus on the Relationship Between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy
We haven’t seen the last of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She will be back in The Suicide Squad, and there’s a good chance that there will be another film that focuses on her character. That film could be a Birds of Prey sequel, or it could be something else, it has yet to be seen.
If a Birds of Prey sequel does end up getting made, director Cathy Yan already has ideas of what stories she would like to tell, and one of those stories would include the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. This relationship began in Batman: The Animated Series and was explored more in-depth and evolved further in the comics. The Harley Quinn animated series is also going to explore the romance more it in its second season.
In an interview with The Wrap, Yan said:
“I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.”
If that’s the case it would have made more sense to at least introduce the character in the first film. This is a relationship that isn’t rushed. Regardless, seeing the two characters team up for some kind of criminal adventure would be fun to see. They have a great dynamic together, and if they actually get a great wild story this could be a cool movie!
When previously talking about playing with the relationship of these characters on the big screen, Robbie said:
“Yeah. If you read the comics you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship. In some comics they convey it as a friendship; in other comics you can see that they're actually sexually involved as a couple. I've been trying to -- I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the comics, so I'm looking to explore that on screen.”
Robbie also said that this is something she’s been pushing for:
"I've been pushing a Poison Ivy reunion for a long time...Because obviously Ivy and Harley have such an incredible relationship, so I would love to explore that."
While we don’t know if Birds of Prey will get a sequel, Yan says, “I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either.”
She’s right. I’m just waiting for her to finally get the insane and great story that she deserves.
