BLACK WIDOW Will Approach Natasha Romanoff's Backstory in Unexpected and Surprising Ways
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, director Cate Shortland, and star Scarlett Johansson set out to make a great Black Widow film that fans would love and appreciate. A lot of people are excited about this movie, but I’ve noticed some fans haven’t shown much interest.
I’m excited for the movie! I’ve been wanting Black Widow to get her own film, and it sounds like the creative team is going to deliver something unexpected, unique, and surprising. At least that’s what Feige recently teased in an interview with Total Film Magazine.
After acknowledging that they have "hinted at [Natasha Romanoff's backstory] throughout all the other films," he promised that they are approaching this movie in a “completely unexpected way.” He went on to explain that "She’s been up to a lot all along – in between when we see her in the other movies – some of which will be surprising to people."
I’m looking forward to seeing what exactly he means by that. We already know that Black Widow takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but judging from what he says here, it sounds like those won't be the only movies this Black Widow story revisits.
Johansson also previously explained that the film is a family drama, and she had to wrap her head around this surprising tonal shift in her story:
“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of. The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”
In the film, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
Black Widow will be released in theaters on November 6th, 2020.
