BLUE BEETLE Makes $25.4 Million at the Box Office, but Earns a B+ CinemaScore

DC’s Blue Beetle wins the box office this weekend knocking Barbie out of the top spot. The superhero movie was expected to earn $30 million dollars on its opening weekend domestic, and it ended up coming in at around $25.4 million. So, it did fall short, but it was this weekend’s box office winner, so that’s something. It also didn’t fall short by much.

Blue Beetle also scored a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ rating on CinemaScore, which is the standard score for movies these days that most people seem to trust. That’s a higher score than The Flash, which earned a B. The film’s been getting some solid positive buzz, which is nice to see.

In case you’re curious about the production budget for Blue Beetle, it was around $104 million, so it actually has a good chance of making a profit when all is said and done. But, as expected, the movie isn’t going to be a runaway hit.

So, does this mean the movie and character will continue on in James Gunn’s DCU? Only time will tell, but if the movie doesn’t lose any money, chances are it will. It seems like WB and DC Studio have both thrown their full support behind this character, so we may not have seen the last of Blue Beetle. Maybe the film’s star, Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), will actually get to play the character for the next 12 years like he wanted.

I still haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet as I’ve been traveling dropping my daughter off at college. But, I’ll get around to seeing it sometime this week. If you saw the film, let us know what you thought!

The story for the movie centers on Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a scarab grafted onto his spine that gives him tremendous powers and the ability to emit blue energy. Here’s the synopsis:

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The movie stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Reyes; Bruna Marquezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister, Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillén; and Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
