Blumhouse Would Love to Take a Crack at the FRIDAY THE 13TH Horror Film Franchise
The last film in the Friday The 13th horror franchise was released in 2009. It’s been nearly 15 years since we saw a film with Jason Voorhees embarking on a killing spree. Well, Blumhouse would love the opportunity to play in the Friday The 13th sandbox.
I guess this isn’t really surprising as they’ve already played with the Halloween franchise, and now they have The Exorcist trilogy in the works. The first of those Exorcist films, The Exorcist: Believer, is set to be released this month.
During an interview with Inverse ahead of that movie’s release, Blumhouse Producer Ryan Turek talked about wanting to head to Crystal Lake, saying:
“Jason (Blum) and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Vorhees in a mask.”
He went on to say:
“Listen, I’ve gone on the record saying Halloween is the ultimate slasher film for me. That’s my favorite slasher film of all time. But Friday the 13th as a franchise is one that I just bow down to. I just love everything about it. And if we were able to live in both worlds, like we do with Halloween, then to be able to live at Crystal Lake for a while would be so incredible.”
There have been some rights issues with the Friday the 13th franchise, but those have been worked out. I have no doubt that one day we will see a new film made in the franchise, I just don’t know who’s going to do it. But, if Blumhouse really wants it, I’m sure they will make every effort to get it. Then they’ll have David Gordon Green direct a trilogy because that’s what they do.
Jason Blum previously said that Friday the 13th is his favorite horror film of all time:
"The scariest movie for me was Friday the 13th. Although, I've never been as scared as when the first time I saw the movie, but the most scared I've ever been seeing any movie was Friday the 13th. I was too young when I saw it and it just destroyed me. So that's a movie that we should all watch in October. And then, obviously, they're less associated with Halloween too, but I think in terms of the best scary movie director, I think is Hitchcock. And I think you'd do pretty well watching Psycho on Halloween, too."
There is a Friday the 13th TV series being planned with original star Adrienne King involved, but that won’t stop a movie from being produced.
