Bong Joon-ho Is Interested in Directing MICKEY 17 Sequel, but Has “New, Weird Ideas” to Explore First

Bong Joon-ho’s latest film, Mickey 17, is already generating a lot of great buzz. It seems the acclaimed director of Parasite, Snowpiercer, and Okja has once again crafted a wild and entertaining sci-fi experience, with Robert Pattinson delivering a great performance.

The film is based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, the film follows Mickey Barnes, a man who serves as an “expendable” for a space colony, which means he’s repeatedly cloned every time he dies on a dangerous mission.

Ashton’s sequel, Antimatter Blues, continues Mickey’s story two years later, and Bong is very much interested in adapting that sequel as well.

While speaking with GamesRadar+, Bong acknowledged the possibility but made it clear that he has other priorities first.

He said: "When I was having a Zoom talk with Ed [Ashton], and he was telling me about it, and you know, he's such a great, fascinating writer, I would love to take on the challenge but to be honest, I have a plethora of new, weird ideas that I want to tackle, so I would like to move on to those rather than a sequel."

As for what those “new, weird ideas” might be, Bong’s next live-action project is said to be a horror-action movie set in a subway. He’s also developing an animated feature.

Whatever he’s cooking up, it’s safe to say that fans are already eager to see what comes next.
