Marvel's Brad Winderbaum Responds to Rumors That AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Will "Reboot" the MCU
For a while now, there's been speculation that Avengers: Secret Wars could act as a "soft reboot" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, restructuring its continuity while keeping some elements intact.
The idea makes sense as Marvel has been deep in multiversal storytelling, which naturally opens the door to reshaping certain aspects of its expansive universe.
Marvel Studios' Brad Winderbaum was recently asked about this rumor during an interview with Screen Off Script, and his response suggests that a full reboot isn't likely.
“You can't really fully reboot anything. It's a very difficult thing to do to a living, breathing fictional universe ... to just start from scratch, because of all the fan investment and love for the stories that have come so far.”
Now, to be fair, most of the rumors have been about a soft reboot, something more along the lines of a reconfiguration rather than a complete wipe. It would have been interesting to hear Winderbaum's take on that specifically, but I should note that his role is primarily on the television and streaming side of the MCU.
If there were any major shake-ups planned, Kevin Feige would be the one making those calls. And even if he were asked, he wouldn’t just lay it all out.
Regardless of how Secret Wars plays out, it's going to be a massive event. Before it hits theaters on May 7, 2027, we'll first get Avengers: Doomsday on May 1, 2026. Both films are being helmed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo behind Infinity War and Endgame, so expectations are high.
The Russos shared their excitement in a statement following the SDCC panel: "Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves."
So, while a hard reset doesn’t seem to be in the cards, there’s still plenty of room for some big changes to the MCU.
