Brendan Fraser Teases THE MUMMY 4 Will Return to Classic Locations and Deliver What Fans Have Been Asking For

After years of hoping, speculating, and watching other versions of The Mummy try to keep the franchise alive, fans are getting a true return to form with The Mummy 4.

If Brendan Fraser has anything to say about it, this next chapter is going to lean hard into everything people loved about the original films.

Fraser recently stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and dropped a tease that should get longtime fans pretty excited. The plan isn’t just to bring the characters back, it’s to bring back the feeling, the adventure, and even the locations that made the first movies so iconic.

"So we're going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for the last 20-whatever years. What we're going to do is saddle back up, go back to the locations."

This isn’t going to be a reinvention or a modern rework. It sounds like a full-on return to the world of sweeping deserts, ancient tombs, and globe-trotting adventure that defined the original trilogy.

Fraser is stepping back into the boots of Rick O’Connell, with Rachel Weisz returning as Evelyn, which is a huge deal considering how things played out in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

That film swapped Weisz out for another actor, and it never quite landed the same with audiences. This new sequel is reportedly ignoring that third installment altogether and picking up after The Mummy Returns, which feels like the right move.

Story details are still being kept under wraps, but the idea of revisiting classic locations opens up some fun possibilities.

Even with a likely time jump, there’s always a chance the story could circle back to Egypt during the 1920s or 1930s, tapping into the era where Rick and Evelyn first unleashed chaos by waking the Mummy. That setting is a huge part of the franchise’s identity, so bringing it back makes a lot of sense.

The franchise has tried to evolve in different directions over the years, from spin-offs like The Scorpion King to the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise. Then there’s Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which was more like an Evil Dead movie.

None of those quite captured the magic of the Fraser-led films. For a while, even Fraser wasn’t sure a return would ever happen.

"I was hopeful for a long while, and then I was like, no, I don't know if they are, you know. Other Mummy movies got made."

Now that it’s real, there’s also the physical side of stepping back into an action-heavy role. Fraser addressed that with a bit of humor, acknowledging that getting back into Rick O’Connell shape isn’t exactly easy.

"Please wish me luck. I'm doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape."

The Mummy 4 is currently set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028. It’s still a bit of a wait, but knowing the film is aiming to reconnect with its roots and give fans exactly what they’ve been asking for makes it feel worth it.
