Brie Larson Reportedly Doesn't Want to Play Captain Marvel in the MCU Anymore Over "Toxic Backlash"

When Acadamy Award winner Brie Larson was initially cast as Captain Marvel in the MCU there were a lot of mixed reactions from the fans. I remember a lot of fans actually being cool with her being cast in the role. It wasn’t until after her Captain Marvel solo film came out that the complaints started to roll in about how she played the character. Regardless, people did get a little crazy on her.

Then there were rumors spreading online about how the actress was somewhat difficult to work with, along with some interview clips during the promotional tours for the film that caused fans to lash out at her. Larson had brushed off the backlash saying, "I don’t have time for it," in the MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios book, and it’s there that author Joanna Robinson indicated that the backlash actually did take its toll on Larson.

“I don’t have time for it. The things that I have extra time to really look at are, like, Am I eating healthy food? Am I drinking water? Am I meditating? Have I called my mom today?”

At the time, she was being positioned to lead the MCU as part of its new "trinity" of superheroes, with the departure of some of its other big stars. It’s explained that she grew disillusioned working with Marvel Studios:

"The future of those Marvel icons was unclear. The departure of franchise anchors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson had already taken its toll, as had the shocking loss of Chadwick Boseman, but other MCU stalwarts were heading for the exits. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland."

During a recent episode of The Watch podcast, Robinson opened up a little bit more and claimed that Larson doesn't even want to play Carol Danvers anymore. She said:

"[Marvel Studios] put Brie Larson in [a prominent place in the MCU]. I don't know if Brie Larson was the wrong person for the role necessarily. But the toxic backlash means that Brie Larson doesn't want to play Carol Danvers anymore."

When Larson was recently asked about returning to play the character again after the upcoming The Marvels movie, Larson responded, “I don’t know, does anyone want me to do it again?' Marvel had expected that Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man would be the trio of star characters leading the MCU into a new millennium, but that was no longer a future it could rely on."

As for if Larson will return to the role or not, I think that all depends on what happens with The Marvels. If the movie ends up doing well and finds itself getting good reviews and a decent box office run, there’s a good chance she would continue to play the character. But, if the movie bombs, she’s definitely going to be thinking about what her future in the MCU looks like.
