BROTHERS Trailer Has Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Digging Into Their Real-Life Family Mystery
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are taking one of Hollywood’s strangest real-life friendship stories and turning it into a comedy.
Apple TV has released the first trailer for Brothers, an eight-episode series that casts the longtime best friends as fictionalized versions of themselves and asks a question that has followed them for years: What if these two guys really are brothers?
The story takes their offscreen friendship, mixes in the very real speculation surrounding their family histories, and turns the whole thing into a family comedy involving a broken engagement, an extended ranch visit, a potential political career, and one secret that probably should have stayed buried.
The story kicks off after Woody’s daughter has her engagement fall apart. Looking for a change of scenery, Woody packs up his family and heads to Austin, where they move in with Matthew at his ranch for an extended stay.
The trip is supposed to give everyone some time to recover, but Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac, played by Holland Taylor, complicates matters when she accidentally reveals an old secret suggesting Matthew and Woody might actually be brothers.
Naturally, Woody becomes determined to figure out what really happened. His search for answers sends Matthew’s ranch into chaos while Matthew has another major life decision demanding his attention.
He’s considering a run for Governor of Texas, which gives him a very different kind of identity crisis to deal with while Woody digs into their shared past.
McConaughey and Harrelson have been close friends for decades, and speculation about whether they could share the same father has been around for years. Harrelson discussed the possibility with Esquire in 2023, explaining just how strange their family history gets.
“I don’t know because we haven’t done the testing. But I can say that there’s a lot of almost insane coincidences. His mom had a relationship with my dad right around the time he was conceived. That seems like a big coincidence.”
Instead of simply answering the question with a DNA test, they’ve turned it into an Apple TV comedy series, which is definitely the more entertaining option.
The fictional version of that mystery allows Brothers to play around with friendship, family, celebrity, and the blurry territory between the public personas of McConaughey and Harrelson and the guys they actually are.
Considering their natural chemistry together, watching them torment each other while trying to solve a possible family mystery sounds like a lot of fun.
The supporting cast includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, Oona Yaffe, and Taylor.
Brothers is produced for Apple TV by Paramount Television Studios. McConaughey and Harrelson serve as executive producers, with Lee Eisenberg serving as showrunner and executive producer.
The eight-episode comedy premieres on Apple TV on Wednesday, September 23, with its first two episodes. New episodes will then arrive every Wednesday through November 4.
