BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Producer Dolly Parton Offers Update on Series Revival
Dolly Parton is an uncredited producer of the original classic series Buffy The Vampire Slayer. If it wasn’t for her, this series wouldn’t have been made. Several years ago it was announced that a revival of the series was being developed, and in a recent interview with Business Insider, Parton offered a promising update on the project. She said:
“They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”
Parton didn’t go into any details on the project or mention who is involved, but there is something still happening with that, and one day we might actually see this revival happen.
Series creator Joss Whedon was developing the revival with writer Monica Owusu-Breen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). The series was referred to as “contemporary, building on the mythology of the original.” About a year ago it was reported that the project had been put on pause. I imagine Whedon is no longer involved for obvious reasons.
In a past interview, Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar talked about Parton’s involvement with the series:
“Little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer, and you know, we never saw her. We’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have our name and I would think, ‘She doesn’t know who I am.’ And then one day somebody asked her about it and she complimented the show and my performance. And I was like ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.’ Her partner was Sandy Gallin and they produced Buffy.”
If this reboot does move forward, it will be interesting to see what the creative team does with it and it will actually match the storytelling quality of the original series. When talking about the reboot, Gellar said:
“I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
What would you like to see from a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot?
