Cate Blanchett Opens Up About Her SQUID GAME Finale Cameo and Potential Role in American Spinoff
When Squid Game dropped on Netflix four years ago, it exploded into a global sensation almost overnight. Now, with the third and final season wrapped, fans were treated to one final surprise at the end, a cameo from the legendary Cate Blanchett.
Her unexpected appearance has sparked all kinds of theories, especially since an American spinoff of the series is reportedly in the works. Now, Blanchett is finally talking about her mysterious role in the finale and whether she might return in the next chapter of this deadly game.
In an interview with Variety, Blanchett revealed how the cameo came to be and just how secretive the entire process was.
“Because it’s such a cult series and they were shooting in L.A. of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis. I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly.
“I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.”
Blanchett also mentioned that the offer came “out of the blue” and that she even had to bring her own suit to the shoot. Despite the surprise gig, she’s up for stepping back into the Squid Game universe for the American version.
“I am wildly open to anything. And in a world that is so beautifully, magically created like that, for sure. They’re amazing world-builders, and that series has been eaten alive. I don’t think there’s a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched in some way.”
Netflix first announced plans for an American Squid Game series last year, with filmmaker David Fincher confirmed to be developing it. But details since then have been scarce. Interestingly, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk didn’t craft the series finale to launch a spinoff.
For him, the ending symbolized that even if one corrupt system collapses, another will inevitably rise to take its place.
So, does Blanchett’s brief appearance mean she’s set to play a larger role in the American Squid Game? As of now, Netflix hasn’t confirmed anything, and Blanchett’s cameo could simply be a nod to the expanding universe of the franchise.
