Channing Tatum's GAMBIT Movie Is Being Evaluated by Marvel and Disney

The fate of Channing Tatum’s Marvel film project Gambit has been in limbo for awhile, but now that Disney and Marvel have the rights back to the character, it’s up to them on how they want to proceed.

During a recent interview with Variety, X-Men producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg was asked what the status was for Gambit and he said:

“All of the movies at Fox are being evaluated… I love the idea of Channing playing Gambit. I think we have a great script for it and I think it’s a role he was born to play. It’s a character I grew up loving and I know the fans love. So I suspect, I hope it will happen.”

Oh, I’m sure that we will eventually see Gambit back up on the big screen. The question is… will it be the version of Gambit that Tatum has been trying to get into production over the past few years!? There have been rumors that Tatum is looking to direct the film himself so that directors stop dropping out of the project!

When previously talking about Tatum’s version of the film, Kinberg said that it will have a "romantic or sex comedy vibe" to it. He explains:

"When you look at Gambit. He’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy. Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film."

Kinberg goes on to clarify labeling the film a romantic comedy saying:

"You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are."

It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Gambit, but whatever it is, it will have to fit into whatever Marvel’s future plans are for the MCU.

Kinberg has been a part of the X-Men film franchise from the very beginning, and who knows if he’ll still be involved with any future projects set up at Marvel Studios. But he is excited about the future.

“There will be a lot of mixing and merging now and I’m all for it and excited to see.”

When asked who he would most like to see in an X-Men movie, he replied:

“I would say probably either somebody from Wakanda or Iron Man. I mean I love [Robert Downey Jr.]. I’ve worked with him. I love what he does with that character. I feel like he created the tonal template for the MCU with the first ‘Iron Man’ movie. And so the notion of Iron Man popping up in ‘X-Men’ or Iron Man interacting with Deadpool is pretty exciting.”

The future of the MCU is bright, and with Marvel Studios having access to the X-Men and Fantastic Four now, I couldn’t be more stoked to see how they bring all of these characters together!
