Character Details Revealed For The Joker Origin Film and Robert De Niro is Reportedly Wanted For One of Them

DC Entertainment is getting ready to rock and role on director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker origin film and today we have a bunch of character details to share with you.

The following information comes from That Hashtag Show and they reveal the names of the characters the production team are looking to cast along with details on the characters. One of the big things that the report offers is that this film will create an entirely new Joker mythology, apart from DC Comics.

There are eight characters revealed below and I'm not familiar with any of them. There's also one supporting character that is mentioned that producer Martin Scorsese is reportedly trying to get Robert De Niro to play. Here are the names and description of the characters:

PENNY

Supporting Female (60-74) Caucasian. Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself. But recently her health has started failing, and she’s nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home. She’s obsessed with her former employer and can’t believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this…

It's speculated that Penny could be the mother of the Joker.

SOPHIE DUMOND

Supporting female (27-34) to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She’s just trying to catch a break..

Sophie is a potential love interest for the Joker or a potential partner in crime…or both.

MURRAY FRANKLIN

Male (65-75) Caucasian

There's no description here but this is apparently the character that they want Robert De Niro to play.

RANDALL

Supporting Male (40-59) Caucasian. Thinks he’s the wisest and most knowledgeable person in any room he’s in, tries to present himself as a mentor to everybody, but is really just looking out for himself, burly.

GARY

Supporting Male (30-49) any ethnicity to play a dwarf; Randall’s best friend, he’s good-natured and a buddy to his colleagues at work, one of the only decent people in the whole movie.

HOYT VAUGHN

Supporting Male (50-69) any ethnicity the old-school manager of hotel staff. He’s seen it all, and finds it difficult to give a shit about much of anything anymore

DETECTIVE GARRITY

Supporting Male (50-59) any ethnicity. Police Detective in a city on the brink; a by-the-book cop, worn down by all his years on the force. He doesn’t care about or take into consideration any of the societal or political ramifications of his cases.

DETECTIVE BURKE

Supporting Male (30-39) any ethnicity. A Police Detective and Garrity’s partner; he’s an asshole, who gets off by being in a position of authority. Being a cop is how he defines himself.

Because someone has to hunt down The Joker for his criminal acts, and it's not going to be Batman in this film.

These are just a handful of characters that Todd Phillips will be introducing in the movie.

The story is said to "delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal" and that it will be more of "a gritty crime drama than comic book movie." Rumor has it that the film story was inspired by The Killing Joke and that it revolves around a failed comedian who ends up becoming a criminal.

The movie is said to only have a $55 million dollar budget, which is considered a low budget for such a high profile film, but if Deadpool can pull off such a badass movie on such a small budget, then this one should be able to pull it off as well. As long as the film has a strong story and script, it should be fine.

This is one of two Joker projects in the works at DC Entertainment. The other project will be part of the DCEU and focus on Jared Leto's version of the character.

What do you think of the information provided here? Are there any details you can pick from the info to try and piece a story together?
