Charlie Cox Explains Why Daredevil's Suit Is Both Awesome and Miserable to Wear During Fight Scenes
Charlie Cox has spent years kicking ass as Matt Murdock in Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again, and while the character makes fighting criminals in a red armored suit look pretty badass, actually wearing that thing is another story.
With Season 2 having wrapped up its eight-episode run on Disney+, fans have gotten another dose of Daredevil's brutal street-level action as he battles Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk for control of New York City. But behind those intense fight sequences is an uncomfortable reality that Cox knows all too well.
During a previously interview with CinemaBlend alongside D'Onofrio, Cox opened up about what it's really like performing action scenes in Daredevil's iconic costume. As it turns out, the suit comes with some pretty significant advantages and disadvantages.
When asked whether wearing the armor changes how he approaches fight scenes compared to fighting in regular clothes, Cox explained:
“It does actually. Yeah. I mean, it's weird. It feels kind of, you feel a little bit more protected. And you know, sometimes when you're doing action sequences, even though you're not supposed to be hurting each other, you and the stunt performers or you and the other actors, you're not hurting each other.
“You sometimes, because of where the camera is, you do have to make a little bit of contact, you know? If I've got the suit on, I feel completely protected.”
That extra protection is certainly useful when you're filming the kind of close-quarters brawls Daredevil is known for. Even with carefully choreographed stunt work, some physical contact is unavoidable, and having that layer of armor allows Cox to throw himself into the action with a little more confidence.
Unfortunately, that protection comes at a price. The costume isn't exactly designed for comfort, especially when you're spending hours throwing punches, taking hits, and performing physically demanding sequences.
Cox continued: “But it also is very, in terms of the movement, it's very limiting. And you get so hot so quickly. You know, you sweat after take one, and then you're wet all day. Yeah. You’re just sitting in sweat all day.”
It's something that's easy to overlook when watching Daredevil take down a room full of criminals. The costume looks awesome on screen, but underneath all that armor, Cox is dealing with restricted movement and an incredible amount of heat, and once the sweating starts, there's apparently no escaping it for the rest of the day.
The season delivered more of the hard-hitting action that fans have come to expect from the character, and Cox's comments offer some fun insight of just how much work goes into bringing those sequences to life.
As cool as it would be to wear Daredevil's suit, spending an entire day trapped in your own sweat doesn't sound like much fun.
