Charlie Day Wants Danny DeVito as Wario in the Next SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE
Charlie Day is officially campaigning for his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Danny DeVito to step into the role of Wario in a future Mario Bros. movie, and now it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing it.
Day, who voices Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, recently tossed the idea out during an interview, and it instantly clicked with fans who know exactly the kind of wild energy DeVito would bring to Nintendo’s greediest anti-hero.
"Danny [DeVito] would fit so well in this universe, and he would be a good Wario, I think," Day told ScreenRant.
That’s really all it takes. If you’ve seen DeVito in literally anything, you already get it. Day and DeVito have spent over two decades working together on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where DeVito plays the unhinged Frank Reynolds.
Their comedic chemistry is already legendary, so the idea of bringing that dynamic into the Mario universe feels like a natural evolution. Frank Reynolds energy translated into Wario? That’s some fun chaos!
And let’s not forget, DeVito has a strong track record with eccentric, slightly grotesque characters. His take on The Penguin in Batman Returns, directed by Tim Burton, is still one of the strangest and most memorable comic book villain performances ever put on screen.
Just a bizarre, unsettling little gremlin of a man who fully commits to the bit. That same commitment is exactly what a character like Wario needs.
Meanwhile, the Mario film franchise is only getting bigger. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has expanded the world in a big way, bringing in characters like Fox McCloud, Princess Rosalina, and even the adorable Pikmin.
With the sequel already pulling massive box office numbers and looking like one of the year’s biggest hits, a third installment feels inevitable. And if that happens, Wario showing up isn’t just likely, it almost feels required.
The real question is whether Nintendo and Illumination are thinking the same thing fans are thinking right now. Because once you picture Danny DeVito as Wario, there’s really no going back.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently playing in theaters.
