Chris Evans Teases Steve Rogers’ “Brutal” AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Story as the Russos “Beat the Crap” Out of Him

Steve Rogers is coming back to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, but anyone expecting Captain America to stroll into the fight, toss the shield around, and enjoy a happy reunion should probably prepare for something much rougher.

Chris Evans has teased what directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have planned for Steve, and apparently the filmmakers are returning to one of their favorite Captain America traditions: making the guy suffer.

While appearing at Fan Expo Boston, Evans talked about the Russos' approach to Steve and why they keep pushing the character to his absolute limit.

"The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him," said Evans. "To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up."

That philosophy has followed Steve through some of his biggest MCU stories. The character has been beaten physically, emotionally, and morally, yet he keeps finding a reason to stand back up and keep fighting. According to Evans, Doomsday will continue that tradition in a pretty painful way.

Evans described Steve's arc in the movie as "brutal," while explaining that what happens to him is necessary because it puts his true character and values on display.

So what exactly are the Russos planning to take away from him this time? The last time we saw Steve was in Avengers: Endgame, where he traveled through time to return the Infinity Stones to their proper places.

Instead of immediately coming back, Steve remained in the past and finally got the life with Peggy Carter that he'd spent decades missing.

An elderly Steve eventually appeared in the present and handed the Captain America shield to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, seemingly closing the book on Evans' version of the character.

Then Marvel decided to open that book right back up. Evans' return in Avengers: Doomsday raised some massive questions. How does Steve get back to Earth-616? What happened to old Steve? Are we even dealing with the same Steve Rogers?

The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer only gave fans more material to tear apart, with theories popping up that the Steve seen in the footage could actually be Hydra Cap or some other alternate version of Rogers. With the multiverse in play, Marvel has plenty of ways to mess with audiences before revealing what's actually going on.

But Steve's potential reunion with Peggy may be the bigger concern. During Marvel's SDCC 2026 panel, it was confirmed that Hayley Atwell will return as Peggy Carter in Doomsday. Combine that with Evans describing Steve's story as "brutal," and it's hard not to wonder whether Peggy could become part of the emotional beating the Russos have planned for him.

Could Steve's return to the present cost him the person he chose to spend his life with? Marvel hasn't confirmed anything along those lines, so Peggy's fate remains pure speculation for now.

Still, if the Russos want to strip Steve down to rock bottom and force him to prove what makes him Captain America, threatening or taking away the life he fought so hard to reclaim would certainly accomplish that.

There's also the possibility that Doomsday could be preparing to deliver some painful exits for other returning Marvel characters, including members of the original Fox-era X-Men. With so many legacy heroes involved, fans probably shouldn't assume everybody is making it through this movie intact.

There's another major piece of the puzzle coming before Doomsday hits theaters. Marvel's upcoming Avengers: Endgame rerelease will feature new footage, deleted scenes, and a special ending designed to connect Endgame directly to Doomsday.

That additional material could completely change how we understand Steve's decision to stay in the past and explain how Evans' Captain America becomes involved in the next Avengers adventure.

Until that footage arrives, we still don't have the complete story. What we do know is that Evans is back as Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter is returning, and the Russo brothers apparently intend to put Captain America through hell again.

For a character defined by refusing to stay down, that sounds pretty appropriate. Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters December 18.
