Chris Hemsworth Joins Taron Egerton and Zazie Beetz in Gritty New York Crime Film KOCKROACH
Chris Hemsworth has officially signed on to star in Kockroach, a gritty crime drama that already features Taron Egerton and Zazie Beetz. The project is shaping up to be a slick, character-driven crime story with serious throwback energy, drawing inspiration from classic gangster films like Goodfellas and Scarface.
Hemsworth is stepping into the role previously held by Channing Tatum, who had to exit the project due to scheduling conflicts. It’s a clean handoff, and Hemsworth feels like a fascinating fit for a movie centered on power, reinvention, and the brutal climb to the top.
The story is based on the novel by William Lashner and focuses on a figure who arrives in New York with no clear past and rewrites his future through force of will and menace.
The official synopsis lays it out like this: “Kockroach is the story of a mysterious stranger who takes on New York’s criminal underworld, transforming himself into a larger-than-life crime boss in a city where power is everything.”
The film is being directed by Matt Ross, whose work on Captain Fantastic showed a strong command of character and tone. The screenplay comes from Jonathan Ames, known for You Were Never Really Here, with revisions handled by Ross himself.
Filming is currently being targeted for April, with New York set to serve as the backdrop for the rise of its latest fictional crime king.
Hemsworth is also set to appear in Amazon MGM’s crime thriller Crime 101, the Russo Bros. Avengers: Doomsday, and the Amazon action film Subversion.
If you’re into rise-and-fall crime stories with stylish menace and a killer cast, Kockroach is a film you might want to keep an eye on.
