Christopher Lambert Confirms His Involvement with Third MORTAL KOMBAT Film
Growing up in the '90s, Mortal Kombat was one of the coolest games EVER, and Hollywood cashed in on the popularity by making a couple of films that were awesome when I was younger. Now, they're just hilariously bad.
Back in 2011, New Line Cinema announced their plans to resurrect the Mortal Kombat film franchise with James Wan taking on a producing role. That third Mortal Kombat film is apparently still in development.
Director Paul W.S. Anderson directed the first film, and he cast Christopher Lambert in the role of the popular character Raiden, which was pretty great casting. During an interview with Loaded, Lambert talked about the movie and said that it's “one of the good computer game movies.”
I love the fact that he calls it a computer game. I haven't heard that phrase in a long time. Lambert ended up turning down the opportunity to reprise his role in the sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation because he "didn’t think the script was very good." But it looks like he's been in talks to come back for the third movie. He even offered some interesting details on what is being planned:
"They have a great idea for the third one. It will be very different. We are going to be traveling through time but in a very special way. So imagine characters having a battle in the middle of London and then whoosh, you smash through a window and find yourself on the hood of a New York cab."
This seems to go right along with some information based on the current script by Mortal Kombat: Legacy writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham. The story for that "centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as ‘Mortal Kombat’."
This next Mortal Kombat film sounds like it could be a lot of fun, and it would be fun to see Lambert reprise his role as an older Raiden if that's the direction they are taking it. Who knows, though, he could be playing a completely different character.
