James Wan Producing New MORTAL KOMBAT Movie
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema looking to push their new Mortal Kombat movie forward, and they've hired director James Wan to produce it. Wan is the director of films such as Insidious, The Conjuring, and Furious 7.
With Wan set to produce, it seems like the movie will move forward sooner rather than later. A few years ago the movie started being planned, and it was supposed to be directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who was the brains behind the awesome Mortal Kombat: Legacy web-series. He ended up dropping out of the project, though.
The current script is being written by Mortal Kombat: Legacy writer Oren Uziel and The Expendables writer Dave Callaham. According to the report, the story "centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as ‘Mortal Kombat’."
Wan seems like the perfect producer for this franchise. The guy is incredibly talented so I'm sure he'll bring a lot of cool stuff to the development of the film. As much as I loved the original movie, I think this new version has the potential to be great.
Wan is currently prepping to direct The Conjuring: The Endfield Poltergeist, which is set to hit theaters on June 10th, 2016. He will also be directing Aquaman, which comes out on July 27th, 2018. Then of course he's going to direct the big screen adaptation of Robotech. The guy is obviously keeping himself busy with a bunch of exciting projects! I'm looking forward to all of them.
