Cillian Murphy Addresses Voldemort Casting Rumors for the HARRY POTTER TV Series

The Harry Potter universe is making its way back to the screen with HBO’s upcoming TV adaptation, and fans have been speculating nonstop about who might step into some of the most iconic roles.

One of the wildest rumors floating around recently was that Cillian Murphy could be taking on Lord Voldemort. Now, the Oppenheimer star has spoken out and set the record straight.

While joining the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy admitted he’s aware of the fan chatter but insists there’s no truth to it.

“No, my kids show me it occasionally, but no, I don’t know anything about that," Murphy explained. He went on to make it clear why he’d likely never step into Voldemort’s shoes:

"I mean, also, it’s just really hard to follow anything Ralph Fiennes does. The man is an absolute acting legend. So, good luck to whoever is going to fill those shoes.”

Murphy’s reluctance makes sense. Ralph Fiennes left a lasting impression as the Dark Lord across the original film series, and trying to top that performance would be no small task.

Still, the idea of Murphy playing Voldemort caught enough traction that even Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone director Chris Columbus weighed in, saying, “Well, Cillian is one of my favorite actors, so that would be amazing.”

The suggestion of Murphy came up with during a past interview and Fiennes responded, saying: “Cillian is a fantastic actor. That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian. Yeah.”

At this point, the role of Voldemort hasn’t been cast for the series, which is logical since the villain doesn’t fully appear in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. That gives HBO plenty of time to find the right actor to step into the role before the show’s debut.

The first season of Harry Potter isn’t expected to premiere until 2027, so fans still have a long wait ahead to see who will rise—or slither—into the role of the most feared wizard in the wizarding world.
