Conflicting Reports on Disney's SNOW WHITE Say the Movie Is "Great" and "a Mess"
There are two inside sources that have conflicting reports about what is going on with Disney’s live-action Snow White movie.
I expected to see some footage from this film at CinemaCon last week during Disney’s big presentation, but they didn’t show off anything from the film, and it has finished production, even having gone through extensive reshoots.
There was confusion about the movie when some set photos form the movie surfaced featuring a group of regular-sized actors in costume, which lead some to speculate that the classic Seven Dwarfs had been replaced.
But after that, Disney released an official photo featuring Snow White with CGI dwarfs. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the character in the set photos will be a team of "bandits" assembled by Andrew Burnap's character Jonathan, who replaces the Prince in the story, and Snow White will still have her seven dwarf friends, but they won’t be referred to as dwarfs.
Richtman also shared that Snow White will be depicted as "more independent, and lead a rebellion against the Evil Witch." He added that they will do "something different" with the poisoned apple thing in the story, but doesn’t expand on that.
As for the quality of the film, Richtman was told that test-screenings went over very well and that the movie is "great.”
But, then EmpireCity Box Office jumped in to challenge that claim, saying: “I actually can refute this @DanielRPK report. As I said months ago that it was in trouble before they moved it back a year, it actually is testing poorly and those involved don't have much hope for it. The film is a mess and not working despite reshoots.”
I’ve heard the same thing from people I know who have knowledge regarding the film. It’s going to be interesting to see what Dinsey ends up doing with this movie.
The first image that was released didn’t really get much of a positive response. One thing that’s been confirmed is they’ve taken this “iconic thing” and turned the story into something completely different.
The film’s star, Rachel Zegler, previously said that Snow White won’t be “saved by a prince,” who she calls a “stalker.” David Hand, whose father co-directed Walt Disney’s original 1937 movie, finds the remake “insulting” and said that his father and Walt Disney would be “turning in their graves.”
Disney spent a lot of money making this movie, and it’s reported that the studio would need to bring in at least $340 million to break even.
The story follows a princess who is rescued by seven dwarf miners, Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy, who make Snow White part of their household after she’s exiled into a dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother, played by Gal Gadot.
Zegler previously talked about the film saying: “This is an iconic thing that people really care about. I don’t want to mess this up for anybody, including myself. The writers and Marc Webb and our entire producing team.”
She added: “It’s a bit different story wise. We were able to do ‘Whistle While You Work,’ which made me really happy and excited. I was really nervous more about the technical element. That first-look image went out… and there’s a lot of CGI in the film.”
She went on to say: “Most of that day was spent singing to nothing. I’m sure you also know how that can be. There was a lot of puppetry and CGI in post. It was really intense.
“There’s a lot of bloopers of me tossing a broom and letting it fall to the ground because that’s apparently how you toss things off to CGI characters. But it’s so much fun!”
Snow White will be released in theaters on March 21, 2025.
