Cool GRAN TURISMO Behind the Scenes Video Show How the Racing Action Was Filmed

I’ve got a must-watch behind the scene video for you to watch today for director Neill Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo. This video comes from Sony Cine, and it puts a focus on some of the techniques and technology that were used to shoot the racing action scenes in the movie. It also features some cool new footage.

The four-minute video also highlights the cameras that were used by the Gran Turismo crew, led by Blomkamp and director of photography Jacques Jouffret. They used some pretty cool camera technology for this movie including the Sony VENICE camera, which has a Rialto sensor. This full-frame, IMAX-certified camera has an 8K sensor which, crucially, can be separated from the main body.

This allows for a filmmaker to place the sensor assembly in compact spaces like a race car and put the bulky body somewhere more accommodating. Blomkamp says: “It literally is not possible to put a cinematic-level, 6K/8K sensor, into the LMP2 race car’s cockpit unless we had Rialto, so it was genuinely essential.”

It’s a fascinating featurette and a must watch for anyone interesting in the move-making process.

The movie is based on professional racing driver Jann Mardenborough, and it’s been described as “the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.” Jann was able to take his impressive Gran Turismo gaming skills into real life through a series of Nissan competitions, which resulted in him becoming a professional race car driver.

When talking about the movie, Blomkamp said: “It’s real actors, in real cars, on real race tracks, driving insanely quickly. The north star for me was to make a videogame title with character work that propels the movie, even more so than the racing. Although the racing is bloody intense, too.”

Game creator Kazunori Yamauchi and Hall are executive producing the film, which Sony Pictures will release in theaters on August 11, 2023.
