CREATURE COMMANDOS Season 2 Is Reportedly Bringing Captain Atom into the DCU

A new report suggests that Creature Commandos Season 2 is about to introduce one of DC Comics’ most powerful heroes into the mix. With the adult animated series now officially in production, it sounds like James Gunn is going to have some fun building out a bigger mythology and unexpected character debuts.

According to Nexus Point News, Season 2 of Creature Commandos will feature the DCU debut of Captain Atom. The report claims this will be the Nathaniel Adam version of the character, who first appeared in Captain Atom #1 in 1987.

While details on his role are being kept under wraps, his inclusion alone signals that the series is playing with some serious cosmic-level power.

Captain Atom has a interesting and complicated history in comics. The original version of the character, Allen Adam, was created by Joe Gill and Steve Ditko during the Silver Age as part of Charlton Comics.

After DC purchased Charlton in 1983, the character officially became part of the DC Universe in 1985, eventually evolving into the more familiar Nathaniel Adam incarnation.

Despite numerous animated appearances over the years, Captain Atom has never appeared in live-action, which makes this debut even more interesting.

There’s also the possibility that whoever voices Captain Atom in Creature Commandos could eventually bring the character to life on the big screen. Gunn has already said that animation and live-action will be connected in the DCU.

Creature Commandos is an animated series, I've written all the episodes, something we're going to do that's a little bit different at DC is gonna have characters move into animation, out of animation, usually having the same actor play their voice as who plays them in live-action.”

Season 2 was officially confirmed earlier this year, with Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran celebrating the show’s success, saying:

“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings.”

“Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios,” they continued. “We are proud to call Max home.” But that will be Netflix soon!

The first season wrapped up on a heavy note, ending with the tragic death of Nina Mazursky while also reshaping the team itself. The finale introduced several new members, including Nosferata, Khalis, a much larger version of G.I. Robot, and The Suicide Squad’s King Shark. That evolving roster makes Captain Atom’s reported arrival seems like a addition that makes sense.

Creature Commandos Season 1 features an impressive voice cast that includes Steve Agee as John Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
