James Gunn Talks CREATURE COMMANDOS: The Return of a SUICIDE SQUAD Character and Season 2 Plans
James Gunn’s Creature Commandos has wrapped its first season on Max, and that was and incredibly fun series featuring an interesting lineup of monster misfits!
During a recent interview Gunn, the creative force behind the series, opened up about the return of a beloved character from The Suicide Squad, a notable voice actor stepping in, and what’s next for this team of monstrous anti-heroes in Season 2.
In the season finale, Amanda Waller hands over leadership of Belle Reve’s "Non-Human Internment Division" to The Bride, cementing her as the new head of Task Force M.
The team now includes Nosferata, G.I. Robot, Khalis the mummy, Weasel, Dr. Phosphorus, and a familiar face… King Shark.
Fans will remember King Shark from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, who was voiced by Sylvester Stallone. This time, however, Diedrich Bader steps in to voice the character, and Gunn had nothing but praise for Bader’s work.
Gunn shared in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes: "I thought he was great. It’s hard because you’re dealing with Sylvester Stallone’s iconic interpretation of King Shark, but Diedrich did an amazing job. He’s an amazing guy and an amazing voice actor."
When asked if Steve Agee, who performed motion capture for King Shark in The Suicide Squad, might return for a live-action iteration, Gunn said:
"My guess is no. I think John Economos is paying the bills for Steve now, and he probably doesn’t want to go back in that godawful, uncomfortable bodysuit. Who knows, maybe he’ll want to do it."
Looking ahead, Gunn hinted at exciting developments for the Creature Commandos, saying:
"We would love for these characters to continue, whether together, separately, or both. We know already that Rick Flag Sr. is in Superman and has a major, major role in Peacemaker season 2. We’ll see who else crops up here and there..."
The future seems bright for these unconventional heroes, and the crossover potential within the larger DC Universe is exciting:
Creature Commandos is a wild blend of action and dark humor, following a secret team of imprisoned monsters sent on high-stakes missions too dangerous for ordinary humans. Gunn’s affection for these characters shines through, as he described the roster:
"Nosferata, King Shark—so it’s basically that King Shark—The Bride, a new and improved G.I. Robot, Khalis, and of course, Weasel and Phosphorus.
"I’m pretty interested in how we do a mummy. I’ve never been a big mummy guy. I’m a werewolf guy, to be honest with you."
The cast includes Maria Bakalova, David Harbour, Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, and Alan Tudyk, among others, with Gunn serving as writer and executive producer.
All episodes of Creature Commandos are now streaming on Max.
