DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 2 Confirmed to Tie Mr. Charles to THUNDERBOLTS* Power Player

There’s a new mystery brewing in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, and it revolves around a character who already feels like he’s hiding more than he’s saying.

Matthew Lillard’s “Mr. Charles” has been one of the more curious additions to the series, and now we’ve got confirmation that his role stretches far beyond Hell’s Kitchen and straight into the larger MCU.

From the start, the name “Mr. Charles” sounded like a cover, and it turns out that instinct was right. The character will share much of his screen time with Wilson Fisk, played once again by Vincent D’Onofrio, and he’s tied directly to Fisk’s ongoing grip over New York City. But here’s where things get interesting.

Mr. Charles isn’t just another player in Fisk’s orbit. He reports directly to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the shadowy powerbroker who’s been quietly shaping major events across the MCU.

That connection was initially rumored, but it’s now been confirmed by the showrunner in a recent interview with MovieWeb, locking Mr. Charles into a much bigger narrative that reaches into Thunderbolts* territory.

If you’ve been following Val’s story, you already know she’s been pulling strings for a while. She first showed up in Black Widow’s post-credits scene, recruiting Yelena Belova and pointing her toward Hawkeye.

She later reappeared in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, where she rebranded John Walker as U.S. Agent. By the time Black Panther: Wakanda Forever rolled around, she was revealed to be the CIA Director and Everett Ross’ ex-wife.

Then came Thunderbolts*, where things spiraled. Her involvement with O.X.E. led to the release of The Void, and her attempt to create a new hero in The Sentry didn’t exactly go as planned. Still, Val managed to pivot, introducing the Thunderbolts as her version of the New Avengers and keeping her secrets buried.

So where does that leave Mr. Charles?

If he’s reporting to Val, then her influence extends directly into Fisk’s operation. That opens the door to a much bigger agenda, one where the Kingpin’s control of New York may actually serve a larger purpose.

It could also explain why Fisk hasn’t made noise about the chaos tied to the New Avengers in the city. Someone higher up may want things exactly as they are.

Lillard himself is excited about what’s coming. Talking about his experience joining the MCU and working alongside D’Onofrio, he shared:

"The crew is fantastic. It's probably one of the best I've worked with in my life. D'Onofrio and I get to work together. We did a movie 100 years ago when we were both babies.

“Getting the chance to work with him again was just fantastic. He has such weight. Not literal weight, he's skinny right now, but when you look him in the eyes, he carries so much power with them."

"It leads to good work. Good writing leads to good work. I thought that last season was really electric, and I think next season is gonna top it. I'm thrilled for the fans, and I'm excited for people to see the work."

"It was a chance to be part of this big community, which is great, but the work is great. The words are great, the character is super fun, and it's nice to...I've always wanted to be in the superhero world, Marvel, DC, obviously, with James Gunn now, so it's nice to finally get my feet wet."

Season 2 raises the stakes as Fisk tightens his hold on the city while Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox, is pushed deeper into the shadows. The fight isn’t just physical this time. It’s about reclaiming the soul of New York from a system that’s been compromised at every level.

With Val now seemingly in the mix behind the scenes, the conflict may not be as contained as it once seemed. Street-level justice is colliding with global power plays, and Mr. Charles might be the bridge between those worlds.

Daredevil: Born Again returns to Disney+ on March 24, and if this connection plays out the way it sounds, fans are in for something pretty awesome.
