DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Showrunner on Matt’s Shocking Reveal, a Major Character Return, and a Season 3 Redemption Story
Marvel just flipped the table with the Season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again, and the fallout is going to ripple hard into what comes next.
Between Matt Murdock’s game-changing decision, a major character comeback, and unfinished business for a fan-favorite cop, the creative team is already laying the groundwork for a wild Season 3.
Season 2 closes with Matt behind bars and Wilson Fisk out of the picture, but that’s not what people are going to be talking about the most.
The real jaw-dropper is Matt stepping into the light and telling the world he’s Daredevil. According to Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum, that move wasn’t taken lightly. “Kevin [Feige] and Louis [D'Esposito] are amazing storytellers. You don't build the MCU if you're not some of the greatest of all time.”
He went on to explain how quickly the idea clicked once it was pitched. “Very quickly, they saw that it was where the story needed to go. And of course, like, we could point to the comics.
“So, as soon as you can point to the source material and show how it plays out and all the stories that we're able to tell after the reveal of the identity, it becomes an easier argument to make.”
Showrunner Dario Scardapane said this isn’t a temporary shake-up. “We're probably not going to do Purple Man doing mass brainwashing of an entire city to buy it back. We're not doing buybacks. Like, if you're taking that step, it's like, 'All right, now everybody knows Matt's Daredevil.'”
That’s a huge line in the sand. Unlike Peter Parker’s brief public outing, Matt’s choice is permanent. The mask isn’t just off, it’s gone.
While that revelation is going to reshape the series, it’s not the only thread moving forward. Scardapane also addressed the future of Cole North, a character fans have had mixed feelings about so far. In the comics, he’s a key ally to Daredevil, and it sounds like the show is still building toward that version.
“You have the redemption of Cole North, [and] that's not done yet,” Scardapane confirmed. “And you know, what is fun about working with this much cast is you can find things that are tiny in this season that are going to be huge in next or tiny in season one that are going to be huge in Season 2.”
That long-game storytelling approach is about to pay off in a big way with the return of Mike Colter as Luke Cage. Fans have been waiting for this, and Season 3 is finally making it happen.
“Luke Cage is a big part of season three,” the showrunner said. “And the funny thing [his return] is hiding an Easter egg. If you know these characters' history and you know some of the comic book runs, you'll know what's happening. We tipped our hand for Season 3 incredibly at the end of Season 2.”
That tease opens the door to something bigger than just a team-up. If you’re familiar with the comics, there’s a strong chance this is pointing toward Luke Cage stepping into a political role, possibly even a run for mayor of New York. With Fisk’s shadow still hanging over the city and Sheila Rivera tied to his administration, trust is going to be in short supply.
All signs point to Season 3 leaning into a more public, more complicated version of heroism. Matt Murdock can’t hide anymore. Luke Cage might be stepping into power. And Cole North still has something to prove.
If Season 2 was about breaking the system, Season 3 looks like it’s going to be about trying to rebuild it.
