DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Showrunner Teases Jessica Jones' Next Chapter in the MCU

Marvel fans have been waiting a long time to see Krysten Ritter step back into the boots of Jessica Jones, and it’s finally happening in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

The return marks the first time the character has appeared since Netflix’s Jessica Jones wrapped up in 2019, and the creative team is already teasing that the private investigator’s life looks very different now.

With Charlie Cox returning as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio continuing his run as Wilson Fisk, the new season of Daredevil: Born Again is bringing some familiar faces back to the streets of New York.

One of the most exciting additions is Ritter’s Jessica Jones, and according to showrunner Dario Scardapane, the character hasn’t been standing still during the years she’s been gone.

Speaking with SFX Magazine, Scardapane explained that the story will acknowledge the real passage of time between the Netflix shows and the current MCU timeline.

"One of the things we’ve leaned into is that time has passed between the end of the Netflix show and the beginning of ours.

“We’re acknowledging that. These characters have matured; they’ve gone through life. And Jessica Jones, bourbon-swilling smartass – what’s it like for her to mature seven years?"

That gap opens the door to some interesting possibilities. Jessica hasn’t appeared on screen in nearly a decade in-universe, and a lot could have changed during that time.

Whatever she’s been dealing with, it sounds like Born Again plans to explore a new stage of her life rather than simply picking up where her Netflix series ended.

Scardapane also made it clear that he never viewed Jessica’s story as finished. In fact, he pushed to bring her back when he started working with Marvel.

"What Melissa Rosenberg did with Season 1 of Jessica Jones is some of the finest superhero television work ever. When I first came and talked to Marvel I was like, 'We’ve got to bring Jessica Jones back!'

“I don’t feel that her story ended. If you read the comic books, you’ll know that there’s a next chapter of her life that I thought was super interesting."

If Marvel pulls from the comics, that “next chapter” could involve a major development in Jessica’s personal life. In Marvel Comics, Jessica eventually marries Luke Cage and the two raise a daughter named Danielle Cage, named after Danny Rand, the hero known as Iron Fist. They’ve been one of Marvel’s most recognizable couples since 2006.

The Netflix era actually hinted at this relationship already. In the first season of Jessica Jones, the character shared a passionate fling with Mike Colter’s Luke Cage. While it didn’t evolve into a full romance on the show, the two characters remained close. Cage even returned during the series finale to give Jessica some heartfelt advice.

Marvel Studios hasn’t officially confirmed Luke Cage’s return yet, but Colter recently revealed that he’s been talking with Marvel about the possibility of coming back. If Jessica’s life has evolved during those missing years, there’s a chance the MCU could reveal that she and Cage are already together off screen.

That possibility could set up some major storytelling down the road. In the comics storyline Devil’s Reign, which is inspiring elements of Daredevil: Born Again, Luke Cage eventually becomes mayor of New York after Wilson Fisk’s political downfall. If Marvel follows a similar path, Cage could play a key role in Fisk’s eventual removal from power.

Meanwhile, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum has teased that another Jessica Jones project might be closer than fans think. That could mean a Disney+ series or even a Special Presentation that explores Jessica and Luke navigating life as parents while still operating in the gritty street-level side of the MCU.

For now, the focus is her reunion with Matt Murdock. Jessica stepping into the chaos of Fisk’s anti-vigilante crackdown should make for a pretty wild dynamic, especially considering her blunt attitude and zero patience for authority figures.

Daredevil: Born Again returns with Season 2 on March 24, and Marvel already has plans for Season 3 in 2027. That gives the studio plenty of room to explore what Jessica Jones has been up to, where her life is heading, and how she fits into the growing street-level corner of the MCU.
