Dave Filoni and James Mangold Set to Direct Two New STAR WARS Movies and Here's What We Know!
Star Wars fans have been wanting to see Dave Filoni get the opportunity to direct a Star Wars film for years. Well, after his time working on the live-action shows The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka, it’s been confirmed that he will finally have the opportunity to direct a Star Wars feature film at Lucasfilm, which is so damn cool!
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made the announcement at Star Wars Celebration in London, and she also revealed that Logan and Ford v. Ferrari director James Mangold would also be directing a Star Wars movie, which is exciting as well!
Back in 2018, it was announced that James Mangold would be directing a Boba Fett movie, but that film never happened. So, this is the second time that Mangold has been attached to a Star Wars film project. Hopefully, this one actually works out for him! Mangold recently worked with Lucasfilm on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which looks fantastic!
The directors will helm two separate films in the franchise. Mangold’s is said to go back to the dawn of the Jedi, while Filoni’s project will focus on the New Republic, and it will “close out” the interconnected stories that are being told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ shows.
Filoni previously teased that all of this was going to lead to a “big event”, so this has got to be it! He previously said:
"Well, from a certain point of view, it could. It could build to a climactic thing and The Mandalorian could still go on. It's not necessarily an either/or, is it? It's an interesting way to think about it. I tend to think, as we've been working on the The Mandalorian and then writing Ahsoka, and then Jon Watts came in with Skeleton Crew, there is an entire time period that is post-Return of the Jedi. And I look at that time period, which before The Force Awakens, is around 30 years of time. When you look at the original trilogy, it's a much less significant amount of time that those three movies take place in. And so, what I like is that we're really building very slowly an ecosystem of characters and politics and events in the post-Return of the Jedi time period. And that may or may not expand in a bigger way as we add more shows to it and add more characters to it."
He went on to also tease a big event, saying:
“I think that the reality of there being a big event in this time period is very real, is all I would say to that. But yes, if Jon wanted to keep making Mandalorian stories, as long as he does not get bumped off in said titanic event, then they, I suppose, could continue. There doesn't seem to be any lack of interest in Grogu and Mando, that's for sure."
This is all so exciting! All of these awesome Star Wars shows are leading this big event movie, and who knows, maybe it won’t be just one movie! What do you think about all this!?
