Dave Filoni Says AHSOKA Season 2 Is a ‘Grand Adventure’ With JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS Vibes

Dave Filoni is taking Star Wars fans on a much bigger ride with Ahsoka Season 2, and his inspiration reaches all the way back to one of the great fantasy adventure movies of the 1960s.

While speaking with On the Red Carpet at D23, the Lucasfilm co-president offered a taste of what’s coming when Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren continue their journey. Filoni compared the scope and spirit of the new season to Jason and the Argonauts, the 1963 fantasy classic inspired by Greek mythology.

Filoni explained: "For me, this is a grand adventure in the sense of stories I grew up watching. I'd say it's no short thing to say. There's maybe a little Jason and the Argonauts feeling to it."

That’s a pretty cool movie to pull inspiration from for Ahsoka. Jason and the Argonauts is a favorite of mine, and it follows Jason and his band of heroes as they embark on a dangerous quest to find the mythical Golden Fleece.

The film is also famous for its imaginative fantasy creatures and legendary stop-motion work from Ray Harryhausen. I actually previously compared The Mandalorian & Grogu to the movie.

Considering where Ahsoka left its characters, the comparison fits. Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are stranded on the mysterious world of Peridea, far from the familiar corners of the Star Wars galaxy.

That opens the door for Filoni and his team to lean harder into strange worlds, ancient mythology, dangerous creatures, Force mysteries, and the kind of old-school quest storytelling that has always been part of Star Wars.

Filoni says the scale has increased for the second season as well: "The adventure is bigger and better, it's the simplest way to say it. And a big part for me, I love the people I work with in every discipline, and I'm so proud of the work they do. And I'm a firm believer that that shows up on screen, and so hopefully that's what people are feeling as well."

Fans got their first look at the season during D23, where the first Ahsoka Season 2 trailer debuted. The footage features more Anakin Skywalker, while Grand Admiral Thrawn is focused on restoring the Empire. Meanwhile, Ahsoka and Sabine are continuing to explore Peridea and whatever strange secrets are waiting for them there.

The Greek mythology comparison also makes the possibilities on Peridea even more interesting. The first season already pushed Star Wars further into mystical territory with the Nightsisters, ancient history, and Baylan Skoll’s mysterious quest.

A full-on mythic adventure could give Season 2 its own identity while still continuing the larger story Filoni has been building across The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka.

It certainly sounds like there will be plenty of action along the way. Eman Esfandi, who plays Ezra Bridger, previously teased just how much crazier things are getting in Season 2:

"There's going to be more lightsabers. A lot more lightsaber action. There's going to be some space battles, some space action, and there's going to be witches, and swords, and explosions galore.

"It's going to be really fun, really fast-paced, and we may or may not hear something about that a little later today. So, stay tuned here at D23 for Ahsoka season 2."

Lightsabers, witches, swords, space battles, explosions, and a Jason and the Argonauts-style adventure? Yeah, that sounds like Star Wars having some fun with its fantasy roots.

The original Star Wars movies were built from a wild mixture of mythology, samurai films, Westerns, pulp serials, fantasy, and science fiction.

Filoni reaching toward classic Greek mythology and an old-school fantasy epic feels right at home in that tradition, especially with Ahsoka and Sabine exploring a place as strange and ancient as Peridea.

There are also plenty of questions still hanging over the story, particularly with Thrawn back in play, Anakin appearing again, and the mysteries surrounding Peridea still waiting to be explored.

Ahsoka Season 2 premieres on Disney+ on January 20, 2027. I’m all for Filoni bringing some Jason and the Argonauts energy into the Star Wars universe!
