Dave Filoni Speculates When Grogu May Start Talking and Who He Thinks He May Sound Like
Season one of The Mandalorian introduced us to “Baby Yoda,” who we now know as Grogu. We know he is the same species as Yoda, and we know he is a powerful Jedi who has now trained under Luke Skywalker. But we don’t know much else about the little guy.
We learned in Season 1 that he is around 50 years old, but knowing that Yoda lived at least 900 years, we can deduce that their species grow at a very elongated rate, so Grogu still seems childlike. So how long until we hear him speak, and what will he sound like?
When asked by Entertainment Tonight how old this species is when they start speaking, series writer/producer/director Dave Filoni replied:
"It's a good question. I mean, I would suppose fairly young. We don't know that he's not talking in his own way, and, obviously, he can communicate with Ahsoka where she can at least divine from him some type of communication. What would his first word be? We'll see, I don't know."
The interviewer speculated that Grogu may sound like Yoda, and Filoni responded:
"What makes you think that's a species thing? That's interesting. Maybe. I think you're influenced by who you're around, it's a good question."
So maybe he will sound more like Din Djarin, or Luke? Or maybe something different all together? When asked how old Grogu is now, Filoni successfully dodged the question, leading me to believe that was an important question.
"We said he was around 50 years old, so then I won't nail down a definitive number, because that would tell you how long these series have been going on. It's such a thing, then we get into this and that, and I've used generalized terms like this because I don't want to give things away. You'll find out, always in motion is the future. He's 50 years-plus, that's all you need to know."
Series creator Jon Favreau just recently commented on how much time passed while Grogu was training with Luke, saying that after several years with Mando, he spent two years with Skywalker. So we know it’s been at least five years since we met these characters at the beginning of the series, and for some reason, they’re being elusive about the timeline. Why do you think this could be?
