David Arquette is set to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in the upcoming new Scream sequel, which is coming from Ready or Not filmmakers Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. They will be directing the fifth Scream movie, and Neve Campbell is currently in talks to reprise her role as Sydney Prescott as well.

Arquette said in a statement:

“I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new. Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

There aren’t many plot details to share, but sources have said that “it will follow a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.”

Franchise writer and producer Kevin Williamson seems excited about Scream 5 and made the following statement regarding the next movie, saying:

“I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy and Radio Silence on the next Scream. Their take on the movie is both original, inventive and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way. Ready or Not  was my favorite horror film of last year and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the Scream universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Spyglass Media Group also announced that filming is expected to begin later this year in Wilmington, N.C., when safety protocols are in place. The script for the new film comes from James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not).

With Arquette coming back, it’s safe to assume that we’ll see other original cast members return as well, such as Courteney Cox.

As a longtime fan of the Scream franchise, I’m actually pretty excited about this next movie!
