David Ayer Shares Script Pages From His Original Ending of SUICIDE SQUAD
Suicide Squad director David Ayer has recently shared some script pages from the original version of his DC movie and they reveal how things originally ended between Harley Quinn and The Joker.
The filmmaker is still obviously upset and annoyed with the cut of the film that Warner Bros. released. He still feels the need to show proof that his original vision of the film was so much better than what we all saw.
The script pages also include an expanded version of the moment Joker uses the electroshock machine on Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and we learn more about the moment Harley Quinn turns her back on the Joker during the final battle with Enchantress.
I would really like to see Ayer’s vision of Suicide Squad, but it will never be released. All we have is everything that Ayer shares with us, like these script pages.
When Ayer was previously asked about his biggest Hollywood heartbreak, he explained that Suicide Squad broke him, saying: “Hollywood — I tell people — is like watching someone you love get f**ked by someone you hate. The big one is ‘Suicide Squad.’ That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”
Every time he talks about this experience he always explains how the studio screwed him over. He went on to share how everything fell apart for the movie:
“Come right off ‘Fury,’ right? I had the town in my hand — could’ve done anything, and I did do anything, and [I] go on this journey with [‘Suicide Squad’]. And the same thing — authentic, truthful, let’s do all the rehearsal, let’s really get in each other’s souls.
“Let’s create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then ‘Deadpool’ opened, right? And they never tested ‘Batman v. Superman,’ so they were expecting a different result, and then they got hammered by all the critics. Then it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a f**king comedy now.’”
When previously talking about his original cut of the film, the director said: “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic.”
In the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad, we were led to believe Joker died in that helicopter crash before making his surprise return in the movie's closing moments to break Harley out of Belle Reve. Warner Bros. decided Ayer's vision was too dark and decided to lighten up the story and tone, hence the "happy ending."
