Devon Sawa Explains Why He Didn't Come Back For FINAL DESTINATION 2
The first film in the Final Destination franchise is easily the best one. There’s now a new film in the works titled Final Destination: Bloodlines, which is going to attempt to inject new life into the franchise.
As that movie is in production, Devon Sawa, who starred in the original film, opened up about the franchise and he also explained why he didn’t return for the sequel.
Not only did Devon Sawa not appear in Final Destination 2, the movie made sure to mention that his character died at some point in-between the two movies from a brick falling off a building and hitting him in the head.
While talking to CB, the actor said: "It just didn't work out. I wasn't in...I just wasn't really capable of working. Then I took some time out of the business.”
He went on to say: “My agents talked to the producers. They ended up discussing going a different way. Maybe I thought I'd come back for the third, but then I never... it just didn't work out.”
He added: “There was no hard feelings with anybody. I've seen every single movie since I went to a couple of the premieres. They're great films. I'm very happy for them.”
Sawa then talked about the upcoming movie, saying: “Teo, who played my son in the first season of Chucky, is actually going to be one of the leads in the newest one, and I can't wait to see him. It couldn't have happened to a better guy. I think he's a super talented young fellow, so yeah, I love those films."
He goes on to talk about how the first movie was born from an X-Files episode that was turned into a movie: "I think the first one was the most psychological thriller of all of them because it came from the guys that came from The X-Files world.”
He continued: “It was originally an X-Files episode that was turned into a movie, and so it had that supernatural sci-fi element to it. I think before we started learning how to use CGI so well, and then that's where it started to veer into is how many heads can we chop off and everything.”
He also talked about the past films in the franchise: “Final Destination 5 was done in 3D, and it was done exceptionally well. I remember seeing all that stuff flying down from the bridge in 3D, and it was done perfectly.”
When addressing the future of the franchise he added: “Look, it's evolved. It's a different film. I think if I did ever revisit Final Destination, I would hope it would go back to a somewhat supernatural feel. I'm just happy to be a fan right now."
The next installment of the franchise is being directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Freaks). Franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick previously offered up an interesting tease last year.
Reddick said: “This film dives into the film in such a unique way that it attacks it from a different angle so you don’t feel like, ‘Oh, there’s an amazing setup and then there’s gonna be one wrinkle that can potentially save you all that you have to kind of make a moral choice about or do to solve it.’ There’s an expansion of the universe that – I’m being so careful.
“It kind of unearths a whole deep layer to the story that kind of, yes, makes it really, really interesting.”
He also said they are going to change things up a lot as the story will not involve the formula that the franchise beat to death over the first five films.
Reddick said: “I will say that it’s not just going to be another kind of ‘we set up a group of people, they cheat death, and then just death gets them.’ And there’s one wrinkle that we kind of added to every movie to kind of like change it up a little bit: this one is… a true Final Destination movie, but it doesn’t follow that kind of formula that we’ve kind of established.”
Final Destination: Bloodlines, is now in production and stars Brec Bassinger (DC's Stargirl), Teo Briones (Chucky), Kaitlyn Santa Juana (The Flash), Richard Harmon (The 100), Anna Lore (Gotham Knights), Owen Patrick Joyner (Julie and the Phantoms), Max Lloyd-Jones (The Book of Boba Fett), Rya Kihlstedt (Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Tinpo Lee (The Manor).
