Director Matt Reeves Says THE BATMAN is Not a Part of the DCEU
Well, this is interesting! Just yesterday we learned that there was a Joker origin film going into development with producer Martin Scorsese and director Todd Phillips. It was made clear that it would not be a part of the DC Extended Universe, and it's not the only DC film that will take place outside of the universe!
According to director Matt Reeves his film The Batman is also not a part of the DCEU. The Batman film's that he will be developing will completely stand on their own. He made the big reveal while he was a guest on the radio station KRCW
"Well I have a vision for a way to do something with that character [Batman] that feels like it resonates with me personally, and a perspective that can grow out into other things. When they [Warner Bros.] approached me, what they said was 'look, it’s a standalone, it’s not part of the extended universe.'"
I have never heard that it will not be a part of the DCEU before. This means anything can happen! And the story can be set in any timeline. It also means that Ben Affleck technically doesn't need to be a part of it. They could get someone else to play the character if that's the direction the studio and the director want to take it! Affleck has said that he will play Batman as long as Warner Bros. wants him in the role. But maybe, just maybe, they won't want him in the role for this.
However, there is also the possibility that the story Reeves wants to tell could still be set in the same universe but not connect to anything that is going on outside of it. One thing that is clear, though, is that the movie will be its own thing and tell its own story without involving anything that's happening in the DCEU films.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. One thing is for sure, though, and that's that I'm looking forward to and excited about Matt Reeves developing a Batman detective movie. I don't care if it's connected to the DCEU or not. Reeves is a great filmmaker and I'm sure he's going to give us a crazy awesome Batman film that fans will enjoy.
Hell, if Warner Bros. is starting to develop DC films outside of the DCEU they might as well put a Batman Beyond movie in development!
What do you think about The Batman not being a part of the DCEU?
