Director Matthew Vaughn Teases KICK-ASS Reboot and Offers Update on KINGSMAN 3
During a panel at New York Comic Con over the weekend, director Matthew Vaughn talked a little bit about two of his big film franchises, Kick-Ass and Kingsman.
The filmmaker has been planning a reboot of Kick-Ass, and he teased what he’s thinking in regard to that film. The original Kick-Ass movie was released a decade ago and it introduced us to the characters Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl, and Big Daddy. That first movie was pretty awesome, and at the time it was unlike any other superhero or comic book film that we had seen before, and it was so much fun!
While Vaughn talked about Kick-Ass, he also offered an update on Kingsman 3, saying: "Next year we're rebooting Kick-Ass and we're making Kingsman 3.” He said:
“Kick-Ass sort of changed people's perception of what a superhero film is at that time. So we're doing it again. So it's none of the characters from the other Kick-Ass.”
But, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to play with the original characters, because he does plan on bringing them back at some point. He said:
“We'd like to bring them back after the reboot, but this reboot is just going off on a tangent that I really can't talk about. But it's fun."
It would be cool and interesting to catch up with the adult versions of Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl. But, before that happens, he’s got another story that he’s looking to tell in that world. When the director first started teasing the reboot a few years ago, he hinted that the movie would focus on Patience Lee, the African-American single mother who assumes the vigilante mantle in the comics. He also said:
"Oh, you've got a big reboot, a big reboot of Kick-Ass in two years. Big reboot ... It's so f**ing nuts that I can't talk about it. But we've got that ready to go. All the rights revert back in two years and then we're going to reboot it where people will be like, 'He is insane.'“
When talking about the future of Kingsman, Vaughn said:
“We’ve got to get on with Kingsman 3 because I was joking that Colin [Firth] is going to end up being a portrait on the side while Taron is Arthur. So we are working on that at the moment.”
That next film was previously teased to be Kingsman: The Blue Blood, which tells a story that explores Kingsman’s group’s connection to Adolf Hitler. This was actually teased in The King’s Man's post-credits scene.
