Director Michael Mann Praises GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, But Isn't Interested in Making a Superhero Film
Direction Michael Mann (Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, Ferrari) recently opened up about superhero movies on The Playlist's The Discourse podcast. During the conversation, he revealed that while he loved watching the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, he doesn’t see himself as the kind of filmmaker who would direct a superhero movie. He shared:
"I only make films that I feel passionate about and that placed me a little bit more on the frontier. That's where I do my best work. I'd like to be a journeyman director, go from film to film to film, but I don't think I'd be very good at it. It doesn't get my blood running. On the other hand, I think that Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, not necessarily this last one, but the two before, have really worked and I love watching them. And the reason they work is because they have a really, really well done story structure behind them. So it's exciting in the sense of being able to expand into myth that way and to create myth. I think that's a very exciting medium. Let's not say something I wanna do. I do wanna do a science fiction project, but it's not superheroes."
Michael Mann has done some incredible filmmaking work throughout his career and I wouldn’t want to see him waste his talents on making a superhero film anyway.
During a previous interview, Mann talked about a couple of other projects that he would like to make one day, including the sci-fi one he mentioned. The first project is a Vietnam-set film, which is most likely the adaptation of Mark Bowden’s “Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam,” which he’s been looking to make.
The filmmaker also brought up the sci-fi feature that he wants to make, but when asked about it, he responded, saying: “I can’t talk about it!”
I hope that Mann eventually gets around to making these films! I’d especially love to see him play in the sci-fi genre sandbox.
