Director Noah Hawley Has His Own Take on STAR TREK and Says He Will Take It Back to What He Loved About the Series

A few months ago it was announced that Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley would be writing and directing a new Star Trek film. We don’t really know what is being planned for the series, if it will be Star Trek 4 or something totally new and different.

Well, Hawley offered a little tease of where his head is at with the Star Trek film he’s developing. When talking to Deadline about it for the first time, he revealed that he will begin work on the film as soon as Fargo Season 4 has finished. Hawley also confirmed that he already has his own vision of the film. This will be his own take on Star Trek, and it sounds like he will take it back to the traditional version of the franchise.

“I have my own take on Star Trek and going back to what I loved about the series Next Generation, when a lot of franchises focus on ‘might makes right’, Star Trek is about exploration and humanity at its best, and diversity and creative problem solving. There’s nothing better than that moment when William Shatner puts on his reading glasses and lowers Khan’s shields. It doesn’t cost anything. But it’s that triumphant feeling about smarting your enemy. For me it’s about to getting to those elements of the show. I don’t necessarily find action in and of itself interesting unless it’s story. So, it’s early days, I’m still talking with Paramount and I have a take and I gotta write a script.”

The director is then asked about the new installment’s connection with Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek TV universe, and Hawley explained, “There isn’t a mandate from Paramount to connect it. And on some levels, there’s a bit of the wall, the TV version and the film version.” He then added that he has his own story:

“I have my own story and want to make sure as I did with ‘Fargo’ and ‘Legion’ that I’m respectful to the underlying material. That I’m not unintentionally changing things that people love or feel passionate about. So, it’s important to do that research as I go.”

He went on to express his excitement saying:

“I’m excited, with Fargo and with Star Trek, to just tell a great story well. I’m sure once I get into the filmmaking of it, I’m always trying to innovate and find ways to create emotions in an audience that they don’t expect and os we’ll just have to see.”

At first, this Star Trek film was expected to feature the return of the original cast, such as Chris Pine as James Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and the rest. But according to a new report by The Hollywood Reporter, the new film might just feature a whole new cast. In regards to that Hawley said:

“It’s early days. I don’t know. But new characters often involve new cast.”

So, it really does sound like this next Star Trek movie will focus on all-new characters, which Simon Pegg also previously teased.

I’m all for this new film going back to the traditional ways of Star Trek storytelling! That’s why I loved the original shows so much. I feel some of the stuff that I loved about those shows has been lost as the franchise has evolved, but Hawley is coming in to bring it back to form!
