Director Patty Jenkins Discussed Why She Really Parted Ways With Helming THOR: THE DARK WORLD
Patty Jenkins’s feature directorial debut began with the Oscar-nominated film Monster, which she also wrote. She went on to direct episodes of some fantastic series like Arrested Development, Entourage, and The Killing, then she really put her name on the map with her first huge blockbuster, Wonder Woman. But amidst those projects, Jenkins was actually hired to direct the 2013 superhero flick, Thor: The Dark World, which she ultimately parted ways with, citing the old “creative differences” as the reason.
But now that almost a decade has passed, and Jenkins has solidified herself in the big leagues of superhero film directors, she has opened up a bit as to her real reasons for leaving the film. In a recent Vanity Fair profile, Jenkins was asked about her decision, and she said:
“I did not believe that I could make a good movie out of the script that they were planning on doing. I think it would have been a huge deal—it would have looked like it was my fault. It would’ve looked like, ‘Oh my God, this woman directed it and she missed all these things.’ That was the one time in my career where I really felt like, Do this with [another director] and it’s not going to be a big deal. And maybe they’ll understand it and love it more than I do. "
I totally understand that. I know I saw that movie, but it didn’t stick with me at all. So I can see why she passed it up. It must have been an extremely difficult decision, because I’m sure that working with that cast and company would have been an amazing experience. But she’s probably right in thinking that the success, or lack thereof, of the film would have reflected on her, and she would have lost out on future opportunities. It was a gamble for sure, and it turns out she made the right choice! Wonder Woman is an incredible movie! And I can’t wait to see Wonder Woman 1984!
Unfortunately, the sequel has been postponed due to the coronavirus shutdowns. For now, we are expecting to see Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters beginning August 24th.
