Disney CEO Bob Iger Believes THE MARVELS Flopped Because There Wasn't Enough Executive Supervision on Set
Disney and Marvel’s latest, The Marvels, was a fun time at the movies, but it unfortunately didn’t do so well at the box office, which is kind of on par with superhero flicks at the moment. Some say it’s superhero fatigue, some say it’s the studio’s choice of quantity over quality, some may even say that movies haven’t completely rebounded from the setbacks from the pandemic, and while it may be a mix of everything, no one is saying it’s because there aren’t enough executives involved, at least no one besides Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Disney’s director told financial journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at the DealBook Summit in New York this week that The Marvels main issues were the quantity over quality issue that he previously said is being addressed, and the lack of oversight it received while it was being made.
"Quality needs attention. ... It doesn't happen by accident. Quantity, in our case, diluted quality," Iger said. He pointed to other reasons why The Marvels floundered in theaters. He said the project was shot during the Covid pandemic and "there wasn't as much supervision on the set ... where we have executives there really looking over what's being done."
I don’t think the executives have any idea how to make a great movie, and I think they’ve done well by trusting Marvel boss Kevin Feige and the filmmakers he chooses to make great movies. They do just need to scale back and focus fully on great storytelling again, and they should be back in business.
