Disney CEO Bob Iger Still Plans To Make R-Rated Marvel Movies Like DEADPOOL
Over a year ago while the Disney and Fox deal was still being negotiated, Bob Iger said at the time that Disney would be open to making R-rated Marvel movies like Deadpool. Here’s a little refresher of what he said at the time:
"It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what's coming, we think we can manage that fine."
In case you’re wondering what Disney’s current stance on R-rated Marvel movies is now that the deal is on the verge of closing, you’ll be happy to learn that it hasn’t changed. While recently on a call with investors, Iger once again confirmed that the studio will continue to make R-rated Deadpool movies and other adult oriented Marvel films. According to Variety, he said:
“We will continue in that business. There’s certainly popularity with those types of films.”
He went on to explain that “the company will make it an effort to ensure it is carefully branding [R-rated films]…so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer.”
So, don’t worry, there will be R-rated Marvel movies in the future. One of those first movie might be Black Widow, as previously rumored.
