Disney's TOWER OF TERROR Reboot Still in the Works With Scarlett Johansson and Taika Waititi
Two years ago, Disney announced that they were moving forward with a live-action remake of their 1997 made for TV movie, Tower of Terror, based on the Disney Parks attraction. The announcement came with the news that Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow, A Marriage Story) would star, and her Jojo Rabbit director, Taika Waititi, would helm. But since then, things have been pretty quiet.
Now we have word via a recent profile of Scarlett Johansson with Variety that the project is still happening! Despite the actress’s recent lawsuit against the mega-company, and its settlement with her in court, Johansson says things are moving forward, and she’s as obsessed with all things Disney as much as ever, which she says stems from a two-year period when her family lived in Florida. She still attends Disney Parks 10 times a year, and geeks out over all her favorite Disney films, including the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid:
“We had annual passes to Disney World, and I have a real passion for the Disney parks. Also, when I was growing up, it was a great time for Disney animation — ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Lion King’ with the incredible soundtrack. Like, I will be pre-buying tickets to ‘The Little Mermaid.’ I actually need to text my sister about that.”
As for Tower of Terror, the Twilight Zone themed ride was previously adapted into a 1997 TV movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst. Disney’s new adaptation was first being written by John August (Big Fish and Frankenweenie), and now has Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out scribe Josh Cooley writing as well. Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder) is still on board to direct. There’s no full synopsis, but the film is said to be about five people in a posh hotel who take an elevator and disappear after it's hit by lightning.
