Disney Is Reportedly Trying to Bring Macaulay Culkin Back for a HOME ALONE Reboot
For more than 30 years, fans have been saying the same thing. If Home Alone is ever going to make a real comeback, it has to bring Kevin McCallister back with it.
Disney may have finally gotten the message because a new report claims the studio is making a serious push to get Macaulay Culkin back for a brand-new Home Alone movie.
The best part? The story that's reportedly being discussed sounds like exactly the kind of sequel longtime fans have been hoping for.
Disney already tried to revive the franchise with 2021's Home Sweet Home Alone, but it failed to capture the charm that made the original movies holiday staples. Fans have made it pretty clear over the years that if Home Alone is ever going to make a real comeback, Kevin McCallister has to be part of it.
Now, it sounds like Disney may finally be on the same page. According to entertainment insider Matt Belloni on The Town podcast, Culkin was recently spotted on the Disney lot, and the studio is reportedly very eager to convince him to return to the franchise that made him a household name.
Belloni went on to claim that Culkin is receiving the full Hollywood treatment as Disney tries to make a deal happen.
"I've talked to people who have heard it, and it's a really good idea for a Home Alone reboot with Macaulay Culkin. If that happens and they restart the Home Alone franchise, that would be gigantic for the next 10 years."
Belloni also shared that Disney is reportedly sweetening the offer by promising to help finance another project Culkin wants to make, essentially giving him the classic Hollywood arrangement of making one movie for the studio in exchange for one personal passion project.
If all of that sounds promising, it gets even better because Culkin already has an idea for how Home Alone should return.
During his live stage show, A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin, the actor explained that he'd be open to revisiting Kevin McCallister, but only if there was a story worth telling. He even shared the concept he's been kicking around.
Instead of simply repeating the original formula, Culkin imagines Kevin as a grown man who's now a single father with a strained relationship with his own son. That fractured relationship becomes the emotional foundation for the movie when Kevin accidentally locks his son out of the house, leading to another round of inventive traps.
As Culkin explained: "The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship. Get let back into [his] son’s heart kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have."
That's actually a clever evolution of the original movie. It still delivers the slapstick chaos fans expect, but it also gives Kevin a meaningful character arc that reflects how much time has passed since audiences first met him. Instead of another nostalgic retread, it would be a story about family, growing older, and seeing the world through a different perspective.
Of course, none of this means cameras are about to start rolling. Even if Disney officially moves forward with the project, it would still need writers, a director, and plenty of development before production begins.
If this project comes together, a holiday 2028 release seems like the earliest realistic possibility, though that's purely speculation at this point.
Still, after more than three decades away from the franchise, waiting another year or two probably won't bother fans. If Disney is finally bringing Kevin McCallister home with Macaulay Culkin leading the way, it's worth taking the time to get it right.
