Disney's Remake of THE ARISTOCATS Will Be Helmed by Best Documentary Oscar Winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson

Last year it was announced that Disney Studios was going to be developing a remake of its 1970 animated film The Aristocats. It was initially reported that the movie would be helmed by Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck with a script will be written by Onward scribe Keith Bunin.

It’s now being reported that the movie will be directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. Last year, he won an Oscar for Best Documentary for Summer of Soul, which was about the 1969 Harlem Cultural festival. Questlove is also a founding member of the Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots.

The Aristocats seems like a surprising and interesting choice for the filmmaker to take on next, and it will be a live-action/hybrid reimagining of the movie. He will direct from a script written by Gluck and Bunin, and the film will be produced by Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman.

The original film follows a family of aristocratic cats, “mother Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie and Toulouse, living a luxurious life in Paris. But when their owner’s butler finds out that the cats are set to receive a massive fortune, he kidnaps them and abandons them in an unfamiliar land — the country. The aristocats then must befriend an alley cat, named Thomas O’Malley, to help them get home before the butler steals what is rightfully theirs.”

This wouldn’t be the first time that Questlove worked for Disney, as he had a role in Pixar’s animated movie Soul. The Aristocats was one of those Disney movies that never really clicked with me, so I don’t really have make interest in what happens with this remake.

What are your thoughts on Questlove jumping on board to direct the movie?
